Cabrinha Crossbow 2010

Cabrinha Crossbow 2010

The 2010 Cabrinha Crossbow IDS is the world’s fastest kite in it’s category. Years of refinement has made the Crossbow one of the highest performing Freeride Race kites available today.

The Cabrinha Crossbow 2010 IDS is a highly tuned wing capable of winning top level course races and being only one of three kites in the world to break the 50 knot speed barrier. The Cabrinha Crossbow started the bow revolution and today continues to define the essence of speed and control, versatility and security.

The Crossbow 2010 IDS launches Cabrinha into an entirely new era of Performance Freeriding by raising the standard of kite control and handling yet again. At the heartbeat of this new design is their innovative Intelligent Depower System (IDS) technology.

The Crossbow 2010 IDS delivers in all areas of power and range of use that you would expect from a Cabrinha Freeride kite.

Cabrinha have implemented a Dynamic Arc progression which reduces the flatness of the arc as the kite sizes get smaller. The larger sized kites have the flattest arcs and highest aspect ratios for light wind efficiency and a wider wind range. The smaller kites have a more conservative arc and lower aspect ratios for control and handling in stronger winds.

This unique design progression makes the Crossbow a chameleon when it comes to challenging wind conditions. Fast flying, quick turning and a wide wind range blow the doors wide open for high performance riding in any type of discipline or conditions.

The Cabrinha Crossbow 2010 IDS has one of the widest wind ranges in our kite offering. The efficiency of this kite led to the creation of the “two kite quiver”. A unique condition in which two kites will handle the needs of most riders. A situation where less is definitely more.

The performance in the Cabrinha Crossbow IDS 2010 comes from the flatter, Pro Span™ Extreme arc and is fast flying profiles. The combination of these two produce more power per square meter than a conservative arc classic kite. Enough power to match the Crossbow’s legendary hang time reputation or to propel you into your next trick.

The pin point control of the power comes from the Crossbow’s ability to depower on demand. You can fully depower the kite at anytime just by placing the bar into the Override™ mode.

Made to withstand the rigors of everyday abuse, the durably constructed Crossbow 2010 IDS lets you ride with confidence knowing your kite is up to the task.

If you are looking for high hangtime, trick riding, surfing or just freeriding, the Crossbow 2010 IDS is the kite for you.

Features:

IDS (Intelligent Depower System): The Intelligent Depower System (IDS) provides an amazing level of control with minimum rider effort and input. IDS is a simplified bridle and control system exclusive to Cabrinha.

IDS produces virtually no bar pressure while delivering precise control of the steering and power of your kite. IDS is so intuitive that it seamlessly provides 2 stages of depower. Interactive Depower on Demand while riding, and an Absolute Depower method to land your kite.

Absolute Depower functions similar to a 5th line system, but without the complexity of the unnecessary 5th line. Cabrinha IDS equipped kites use only 4 lines for a simple, uncluttered method of control and security. Additionally, the IDS bridle maintains all of the instant relaunch functionality the Cabrinha kites are famous for.

Durability: This season Cabrinha have taken durability head-on with the addition of transitional strut panel materials and reinforced LE closing seams. Cabrinha have also reinforced the high load areas of theirkites with a transitionally weighted material.

This well-placed material acts as a buffer zone between the rigid strut areas and the canopy. The entire canopy of all kites are flat seamed and taped prior to sewing. This is 20% stronger than the free hand sewn method of a top stitch.

The leading edge closing seams now impliments a hot melt glue tape in the leading edge closing seam for added strength. The entire trailing edge implements a two-ply of tough 70 gsm material for added durability and strength.

The full contact between the strut and the leading edge helps to ensure a rigid frame. The positive connection not only provides stability while the kite is in flight but delivers added durability and a rapid relaunch.

Sprint: The Sprint™* inflation system is a simple to use feature to quickly inflate your kite to an even pressure. The Sprint™ system uses a single inflation point to connect your high volume, two way Cabrinha pump. As you pump your kite with air, all struts and your leading edge inflate quickly and simultaneously to the desired pressure. The supplied leash pump and threaded valve connection keeps your kite under control even when pumping up directly in the wind.
Once the kite is pumped you can choose to clip off, or isolate the air contained in the struts. This way if you damage a strut while in use, the rest of the kite will continue to maintain its pressure. At the end of the session you can choose to deflate your kite completely by disengaging the strut air clips, or you can keep your struts inflated and put your kite away rolled up so that the next session will take just minutes to set up.

Cabrinha Powerdrive IDS Control System: The Powerdrive IDS is equipped to take advantage of Cabrinhas new Intelligent Depower System features. With Powerdrive IDS you now have complete control of your kite whether it is flying powered up, or resting completely depowered on the water or land.

With the increasing demand for increased function and kite control the 2010 Powerdrive IDS steps up to the plate to meet the challenge. The all new Powerdrive IDS control system has been redesigned from the bottom up to accommodate many new features while streamlining its user interface. The result of this intensive development effort is our most refined and evolved control system to date.

In a huge industry first, Cabrinha has managed to internalize the IDS landing line into the main depower line. The landing line now occupies its own chamber alongside the depower main line for added protection and a streamlined interface. With the all new internal IDS security system, Cabrinha makes good on its promise that performance and security are no longer mutually exclusive. The all new internal Intelligent Depower System (IDS) puts the industry leading 4 line security right at your fingertips when you need it and out of your way when you don’t. Cabrinha have internalized the landing line to protect it from the elements and to simplify the control system. The new IDS landing line is virtually invisible while riding but right there when you need it.

The all new OverSlide™ stopper unit is a sliding system that allows the rider to temporarily let go of the control system to unspin the twists in their control lines. It also serves as a means to contain the bungeed power adjusters. OverSlide™ is designed to slide out of the way when forcefully pushed with the control system. OverSlide™ can be positioned anywhere on the main depower line and the rider can choose their desired sliding tension. The all new OverSlide IDS now gives you the freedom to spin your bar when and where you want along the depower main line. You can choose the release tension and position Overslide where you want.

The Powerdrive IDS control system now implements Cabrinha’s new forged alloy section with an expanded entry and exit opening for the depower line. This feature increases the ease of bar movement over the depower line even at extreme angles.

The Powerdrive IDS is the only bar on the market with soft EVA multifunction ends. The EVA ends create a seamless transition from the center of the grip all the way to the ergonomic, protective ends. This provides added comfort when doing aggressive turns at the ends of the bar. The ergonomic geometry of the bar ends also serve as line winders to adequately manage your line set.

The soft EVA ends have also allowed Cabrinha to lower the pivot point of the steering lines right down to the bar. This reduces the turning impulse required to steer your kite.

The EVA bar ends have sufficient buoyancy to float the control bar and lines, allowing Cabrinha to eliminate the cumbersome external floats for an even more streamline, uncluttered look and feel.

The new Powerdrive IDS control system is completely void of any pulleys. The IDS equipped kites all work on a direct 1:1 method of control. This produces virtually no bar pressure, and leaves the bar free of added lines and pulleys.

Industry leading Quick Release. Safety is an integral part of the Cabrinha design culture. This is why they have used the same quick release method for three years running. Their quick release has very little moving parts and is not susceptible to salt or sand. Cabrinha do not make their Quick Release perform any other function than to “Quickly Release”. It is easy to activate with a right or left hand, whether the kite has power or not. It’s simple. Time tested. Proven.

If at anytime during the Absolute Depower process (after the main QR has been activated) you need to completely separate yourself from your kite, you can pull the secondary QR where the landing line attaches to the harness loop.

The same patented technology that provides the Cabrinha Crossbow’s IDS high performance, is also the core technology responsible for it’s high level of security. security, performance, and handling are no longer mutually exclusive.

The Cabrinha Intelligent Depower System (IDS) provides an amazing level of control with minimum rider effort and input.

Cabrinha’s IDS equipped kites use only 4 lines for a simple, uncluttered method of control and security. Additionally, the IDS bridle maintains all of the instant relaunch functionality the Cabrinha kites are famous for.

The Cabrinha Crossbow 2010 IDS wraps all of these features into one kite to deliver:

  • Absolute and total control of the power of your kite.
  • The widest wind range of any kite on the market.
  • More power per square meter than a classic arc kite.
  • Incredible hang time.
  • The highest level of security.
  • A relaunch feature that does not require a 5th line or any wing tip tension fittings.

The Crossbow 2010 IDS is essentially a flatter 4 line inflatable kite which has incredible efficiency and depower capabilities. The flat arc of the kite, also known as Pro Span Extreme, produces more raw power than a classic arc kite of the same size. The flatter arc and unique leading edge bridle are the elements responsible for the Crossbow’s incredible depowering capabilities. The Crossbow 2010 IDS, together with the new IDS control system provides a level of security that can only be described as revolutionary.

Kitesurfing has finally arrived to the 21st century and the Crossbow 2010 IDS is here to announce its arrival.

Pro Span™ Extreme
The implementation of Pro Span™ Extreme into the Crossbow 2010 IDS has provided Cabrinha with huge gains in the power equation. The flatter arc of the kite now means that the majority of the kite’s surface area is working for you in a lifting capacity. Unlike a classic arc which only uses approximately 50 percent of it’s arc for lifting, the Crossbow’s main lifting area is expanded to an incredible 80 percent of the kite’s surface area. This means that the smaller, lighter, Crossbow kites deliver the same power as a larger classic arc kite.

Usable Wind Range
Raw power is useless if there is no way to control it. This is where the Crossbow 2010 IDS shines. The Crossbow 2010 IDS has approximately 30 percent more power range than any classic arc kite. This means that a 12 meter kite, for example, can be powered to the equivalent of a 14 meter by sheeting the control bar towards the rider. At the same time it can be depowered down to the equivalent of a 8 metre just by pushing the bar towards the kite. When the control bar is pushed into Override Mode the kite achieves total depower.

Crossbow 2010 Bridle System
The Crossbow’s unique patented bridle delivers on two important fronts: Stability and Trim. The obvious benefit to the performance of the kite is the way that the bridle fully supports the leading edge of the kite under the constantly changing loads of pressure. This increased stability allows the kite to react to the riders input from the bar without the deformation that can occur with a traditional kite. The other revolutionary feature of the bridle is its ability to drastically change the angle of attack of the kite while keeping equal pressure on all load points. This in turn creates an unprecedented range of power and trim including total depower.

The Crossbow 2010 IDS bridle serves two functions. The most obvious function is the way that it fully supports the flat arc of the kite (also known as Pro Span Extreme). This helps to keep the kite flying rock solid even when riding through choppy water in gusty wind. The second function of the bridle is to allow the kite’s angle of attack (AOA) to radically change. This is the main feature responsible for the Crossbow’s incredible range and depowering capabilities.

The bridle even allows for the AOA to reach a zero point where the kite stops pulling altogether. The interesting thing about this bridle is the way that it places equal tension on each attachment point even while depowering. Jelly fishing is not possible with the Crossbow 2010 IDS.

Instant Relaunch
The Crossbow 2010 IDS has a built-in relaunch function. When the kite is leading edge down on the water or snow, just pull on either the left or right leader line to choose which direction you would like to launch the kite. The wingtip will rise out of the water. You can then choose to hot launch the kite from the bottom of the window or you can put the kite in a side launch position at the edge of the window for a slower relaunch.

Keep in mind that this technique works best when most of your forward movement is stopped. If you have your board with you, put your feet in the straps, and sit upright with your board in front of you to slow or stop all of your forward movement. This will keep tension on the lines. Do not swim towards the kite as you would with a classic kite relaunch method.

F-One Bandit III 2010 Review

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Fone Bandit III test report (from Randy Hereman)

First of all I want to start with the fact that I am an International team rider for F-one. If you want to know my experience about the new Bandit III, then keep on reading and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me @ randy @ randyhereman.com.

The Bandit III is a totally new designed kite. The concept (Delta C-Shape) is the same, but the profile has changed. The B3 (from now on I’ll refer to the Bandit III as ‘B3’) is nothing like the Bandit Dos or the original Bandit.

The new B3 will be provided with a one-pump system and the bridles are cleaner and more comfortable. The kites have a higher AR (aspect ratio), more lift and stability. The high end of the kite has got a lot bigger and the low-end remains the same.

The bar is provided with equal line lengths. Witch is ideal if, for example: you don’t have the money to buy a complete set of kites. Now you can just buy a kite only and use the bar from your other kites.
The UPS on the bar has changed into a newer and better system. A lot more clean, and perfect for unhooking. When you unhook the UPS will click into the bar and remains there for the rest of your jump. When you want to hook back in  the chicken-loop will always be in the same place.
The safety system is still the same. It’s a little old fashion and could have changed into a newer system. But the most important thing is that this system will always work, regardless if there is sand or anything into it.
The bar on the picture is not the production bare yet. This one will be white (and looking better :-).

These are the first technical differences/features that I can come up with. Now I’ll tell you about my personal experience and feelings with the new Bandit 3.

The first thing you notice when you are standing on the beach is the stability. It just doesn’t fall out of the air. I had the kite several times above me in gusty/unstable wind and the kite flew far over my head. Not a single time the kite dropped out of the sky. It just fly’s backwards, back into the wind-window and catches power again. Even after I missed a high handlepass and I dangled down on my leash into the water. The same thing but now even more extreme; the kite fly’s over my head, the lines are completely slacked (no more tension on the lines) and I stay underwater with my arms protecting my head, afraid the kite falls out of the sky and the lines are all around me. The kite slowly floats back into the wind-window and stays in the air.

When the wind picks up the B3 is still riding super comfortable. The difference between the B3 and the Bandit Dos is huge. Before, when I was to over-powered for unhooked tricks, I just didn’t get the courage to unhook and make my moves full power. This year’s kite has less bar pressure when you are overpowered and riders a lot more comfortable. Therefore giving me more confidence to unhook and try my moves, even if I am overpowered.  Because of the higher AR, the kites are squarer instead of round (I hope everybody understands what I mean). Because they are more square they are less nervous, and more direct and precise during the jumps. Especially unhooked. When the Delta C-shape kites have a lower AR, the profile looks more round and the kites will sometimes go up or down when you edge. When it goes up you get more lift and go higher then expected and loose balance. When the kite goes down you will have obviously less lift and the kite will go down during your jump. Making it a lot harder to land. With big kites and light wind it was never a big problem. The wind is to soft and the kites react to slowly. But with kites from 5m2 to 9m2 you can notice a big difference. It is a lot more stable and better.

For unhooked riding there is a better UPS now (see above for more details) and the there is less drag during the wakestyle jumps (jumps with your kite low, without moving your kite), making it easier to pass. If you are used to the Bandit Dos then it will take a little to adjust to it, it is a different timing. But once you adjusted it will be a lot easier and better.
The last big change in the B3 is the kite loops. The kite is looping a lot smoother and makes a nice round loop, instead of just turning around the tip. I’m not a technical designer but I think it is because of the higher AR and the better c-shape.

The durability of the one pump system will have to prove itself over time. I’ve been riding with a one pump system, together with Pauline, for the last 6 months and only had some problems in the beginning; The canopy of the kite broke because there was no sleeve around the plastic and that was creating friction between the plastic and the canopy. Making the canopy weak and therefore breaking easier. Placing the one-pump more to the outside and putting a neoprene sock around the plastic has solved the problem.

Faceplants and wind!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Well, as a kiter here in Cabarete you get used to the choppy water and gusty wind sometimes. Even if its strong and perfect to kite in sometimes the gusts just hit you and then you flyyy. That is what happened to me today, but even so it woke me up and gave the people at Extreme hotel a good laugh. So, the wind is good the sun is shining and I still love it and have no plans of going home in the next couple of months.

Cheers,megkiter

Wohooo!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

So, since last time this lazy kitegirl have actually started kiting more and more, and it’s all good! The crowd at The Cosmic kite lounge now is a awesome group and we have so much fun! The wind and sun is on for sure, and I can’t picture any where else in the world I want to be right now. Even though I got eaten by a huuuuge wave at the reef, I saw it coming, tried to jump over but I was too late. Laughing so hard when I finally got the board back!

Anyway, not much else than kiting going on! So for today this is it from Cabarete, KiteBeach.

Crazy, crazy day!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The wind is back here on kitebeach, Cabarete, and it is for sure.  People that started on 12meters are now powered up on 9meters and 7meters, it’s just crazy. But of course, we love it, after a few days with absolutely no wind at all and blue sky everyone is out. The water is crowdes as always, new tricks are in motion for the upcoming contest in July. Couple of kites in the palm trees are not to awoid when the wind kicks off like this.

Right now some people are coming off the water, tired from hours of kiting in this strong amazing wind! So now I don’t see any reason for anyone to not make Cabarete, Kitebeach as the next beach to fly their kites on.

At the Extreme hotel we are a good group now, and even if it’s no wind we all play volleyball, talk about kiting, go swimming and keep the mood up even if the wind doesn’t show up, something that is not normal for this time of year. So now it’s again time for the famous local “Presidente” beer and high five for another awesome day of kitesurfing.

Until next time, plan the trip down here. It’s hot, it’s windy.. it’s just perfect!

Kiting is life

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Well, I have been so lazy with the kiting since I got this amazing job. But today was the day, and since I’m allready really done with the lessons, last year, it was amazing to get a good feel of it again. Kiting is life! This day have been perfect. The guys have been kiting until sundown and the weather have been awesome. Just love it! I’m hooked. So spending my happy tuesday at my favorite bar in Cabarete, Lax, working and drinking a well deserved glass of wine. Cheers, and let’s hope for a similar day tomorrow.

Sunny Cabarete!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

It’s sun and it’s hot and the wind will show up in a while I’m sure. People are waiting, hanging out, playing with trainer kites and just relaxing before the Cabarete-wind show up and blow us away. The Cosmic kite school and shop are cleaning up the beach and making the place ready for the fun to begin. Last night we attended to karaoke, but the rumors about the wind being back made us all take it easy…. So let’s go and have some fun! Cheers.
